Eligibility & Time line


Who is eligible for the study?
  • Must be 60 years or older ( less than 90)
  • Overweight
  • Haven't weight trained for the past 1 year
  • should be in town for 12-15 weeks
If you fulfill the above criteria, you will be scheduled for Day 1 Testing. On day 1 testing, you will be evaluated  to see if you  have low muscle mass and strength and body mass index. If your muscle/strength is below the cut off, you are eligible to continue in the study.


What is the study time line?


*There will also be a blood test scheduled before training.
* Training will start on August 12

How should I Prepare for Test Day 1?

− NO food and drink less than 3 hours before testing time
− NO alcohol less than 12 hours before testing time
− NO vigorous exercise less than 48 hours before testing time
− NO excess food and drink on the day before testing
− Please be aware of your upcoming availabilities to schedule the remaining (2) testing days.

Where can I park?

  • There are metered lots by Levante avenue. 
  • We have been allotted only 2 parking spaces that can be parked for free in the lab parking lot. 
  • You need a Univ of miami parking tag to park in any of the university parking lots. So please bring some quarters.
What should I wear?

Please wear flexible exercise clothes, and closed toe sneakers. If eligible, exercise testing will occur all (3)
days.

What does the testing days include?

Day 1: We will test for BMI, muscle mass, grip strength & gait speed. If you are below the cut off for muscle mass/function/BMI, you are eligible for the study and will go on to perform power testing.
Day 2: We will test for function and again for power testing on the weight machines.
Day 3: We will test for function using another test and for power. We have broken down the 11 machines into three days of power testing. 
Blood test: You will be scheduled for blood test (basic metabolic profile)  another day at the UM medical campus. This test is optional.
